Pet Emergency Critical Care
Our ICU is staffed round-the-clock with dedicated Veterinarians, Certified Veterinary Technicians, and Technician Assistants who have the training and expertise to offer the highest level of care for pets suffering from life-threatening trauma or serious illness. The Critical Care Service works alongside colleagues in other specialty services at VCSG, and we take pride in providing this comprehensive compassionate, integrated and collaborative approach to treating and caring for our most compromised patients. In addition to always providing urgent care and attending to any simple or acute emergency your pet may experience, our hospital and its staff are equipped to provide the highest level of intensive care, including:
- Management of Serious Medical Conditions including shock, DKA, acute liver injury, renal failure, acute and chronic metabolic illnesses, heart failure, and immune-mediated disorders
- Management of Major Trauma including bite wounds, head injury, snake envenomation, and motor vehicle trauma
- Treatment of Complex Emergencies including heatstroke, near-drowning, refractory seizures, smoke inhalation, burns, unremitting vomiting, and intoxications
- Stabilization of Critically-Ill Patients including post-operative monitoring and care
- Hemodynamic Monitoring including blood pressure, telemetry, oximetry, and capnography
- Full In House Laboratory including blood gas and coagulation testing
- Advanced Fluid and Electrolyte Therapy
- Transfusion Therapy includes whole blood and component therapy (plasma, red blood cells, cryoprecipitate, platelet-rich plasma)
- Multimodal Pain Management including continuous infusions and epidural analgesia
- Oxygen Supplementation, Airway Management, and Short Term Ventilation
- Enteral and Parenteral Nutritional Support
- Pleural Pericardial and Peritoneal Drainage
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
- Pressor Therapy and Management of Arrhythmias including peri-operative and post-resuscitation monitoring and support

Emergency care involves completely evaluating the patient and may require stabilization with intravenous catheters and administration of intravenous fluids, pain medications, oxygen therapy, or even blood or plasma transfusions. Our in-house laboratory, radiology, and ultrasound capabilities enable us to obtain crucial diagnostic information very quickly.
